What is Psychedelic Therapy?

Psychedelic therapy (also known as psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy) is a type of mental health treatment in which a psychedelic drug is taken as part of the treatment process.

The use of psychedelics is usually combined with talk therapy in psychedelic therapy. While this may sound surprising to many, psychedelics have been used for both therapeutic and spiritual reasons in many indigenous cultures and countries. However, psychedelic therapy is generally new to the world of Western psychiatry.

In both clinical and nonclinical settings, several kinds of mind-altering psychedelic drugs are currently being administered and researched for therapeutic purposes. Examples of psychedelic drugs that are naturally derived from plants in nature include psilocybin (mushrooms), DMT, peyote, ayahuasca, and ibogaine. Some examples of human-made chemical compounds of psychedelics include ketamine, MDMA, and LSD.

My experience with psychedelics has been a broadening of the mind, and more importantly, a window into the new perspectives around my own life and my interactions with the others. I’ve had some some of my most profound life insights during my journeys which have helped me overcome roadblocks that I previously could not get past and allowed me to see things in a new light, such that I’m able to progress like I could not previously.

Ultimately I leave those sessions with more love, hope, empathy, and peace.

Therapy in Las Vegas with Psilocybin, MDMA & Ketamine

Many people have tried everything to overcome depression, PTSD, or anxeity. And now, there is growing research that psychedelic therapy can help!

According to a 2016 study a single dose of psilocybin significantly reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety in patients with life-threatening cancer.

There is some evidence that psychedelics may be useful in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder. (PTSD). According to a 2019 study published in The Lancet Psychiatry, a combination of MDMA and psychotherapy was effective in reducing PTSD symptoms in a group of military veterans and first responders. These findings are promising for the future of treating trauma and doing trauma work as a whole.

Research, Approval, and the Future of Psychedelic Therapy

Many companies are currently seeking approval from the Food and Drug Administration for psychedelic-assisted therapies. If approved, this therapy could become more widely available to patients seeking mental health treatment.

Researchers are also using neuro-imaging instruments like PET scans and fMRI to get a glimpse into how psychedelics affect the brain. To do this, biomarkers in the brain are identified and used to predict one’s treatment response.

Disclaimer: These recent findings are definitely exciting, but more research is needed to fully understand the benefits and risks of psychedelic therapy for mental health. Due to the nature of the treatment, psychedelic therapy should only be facilitated under the guidance of a trained professional in a safe and controlled environment.

What is a Psychedelic Experience Like?

A psychedelic journey is often described as ineffable: deeply profound and yet impossible to put into words. As if words don’t even do it justice.

The most powerful way to experience psychedelic assisted therapy is to use eye shades and listen to music. This allows your brain to fully experience the visuals and the sounds, enhancing the experience and allowing you to go deeper inside.

Many people report seeing bright, vibrant colors. It may feel like you’re dreaming about or watching a screen saver. People often report themes about nature or feeling like they’re in a dreamlike state, still conscious and thinking and feeling deeply. Most report a deep and profound sense of peace.

Music often evokes powerful feelings, which is why it is a central part of the psychedelic therapeutic experience. It allows you to go deeper, and your thoughts may flow with the music.

What If I Have a "Bad Trip"?

When sourced and administered in the proper set and setting, there is no such thing as a “bad trip,” although you may encounter challenging material. The brain is incredibly intuitive and goes where it needs to go, healing what it needs to heal. Though sometimes that healing work can be uncomfortable, most patients report an overwhelming sense of peace even when it’s challenging. An awareness that this is hard but feels good. Uncomfortable, yet incredibly productive.

This is another reason it’s critically important to have a trusted, skilled therapist as a guide. Someone who is trained, experienced, and certified to provide psychedelic-assisted therapy in case you need support, grounding, or assistance to get to the breakthroughs you’re looking for.

You’ll find, most anecdotes of a “bad trip” are by those who were not in the proper set and setting, without the proper therapy beforehand or support during. At a party, club or concert, mixing with substances like alcohol or other drugs, and/or sourcing from unreliable sources, trying to have fun when their brain decided to go a different direction.

Psychedelic medicines are incredibly powerful, incredibly healing and must be used with care and respect. Please do not use these powerful, brain-altering, therapeutic medicines on your own, or with insufficiently trained guides.
